Product application instructions
APPLICATIONS
The high alloying level and high ferrite content of the deposited metal enable FCW S 312 to benefit from very high tolerance to hot cracking and dilution with a very wide range of base metals. Preheating can be minimized or even avoided. The deposited metal hardens and resists frictional wear.
Examples:
– Joining stainless steels of similar composition or ferritic stainless steels
– Heterogeneous assemblies between stainless steels and non- or low-alloy steels
– Underlayment before hard surfacing
– Maintenance work on steels with limited weldability
– Welding of high-carbon hardening steels, of defined or undefined composition, and generally of all crack-sensitive steels such as tool steels, manganese steels, spring steels and high-speed steels.

Why choose this cored wire?
- Very high mechanical strength and crack resistance
FCW S 312-O contains high levels of chromium (~30%) and nickel (~9%), giving it a very stable mixed ferrito-austenitic structure. Result:
-excellent resistance to hot cracking,
high tensile strength (often > 800 MPa),
-ideal for unknown, alloyed or hardened steels.
- Perfect for welding dissimilar metals
312 is very tolerant of metallurgical differences: it is often used for assembly or reloading:
-carbon steel ↔ stainless steel,
-hardened steel ↔ mild steel,
-or older pieces of uncertain composition.
- Open arc (gas-free) technology = practical and economical
No external protective gas required
- Excellent reloading performance
FCW S 312-O gas-free cored wire is often used to make :
-buffer layers on parts to be reloaded,
-moderate wear hardfacing, in mechanical engineering or industrial maintenance.
- Heat and corrosion resistance
It withstands high temperatures (up to ~850°C) and offers good corrosion resistance, thanks to its high chromium content.
